Volleyball Rolls Past Western Colorado on Parents’ Night

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines Volleyball team dominated Western Colorado Friday night inside Lockridge arena in its fourth straight win, defeating the Mountaineers 3-0 on Parents' Night.
 
Abby Tiesman led Mines' well-rounded attack with 13 kills while hitting .333. Janice Jin was right behind with 10 kills of her own. Drew Stokes was stellar at setter with 38 assists and six digs. Elle Duis was the star on defense with 12 digs and three service aces. Tiesman also led the Orediggers defensively at the net with three total blocks.
 
Mines (21-3, 15-1 RMAC) collected four total blocks as a team and limited Western Colorado (2-22, 1-15 RMAC) to a negative hitting percentage of -.036. The victory keeps Mines alone at #1 in the RMAC standings and deals the Mountaineers their fifth straight loss. An Oredigger Saturday guarantees Mines a share of the RMAC regular season championship.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set of the night was arguable Mines' most impressive performance. The Orediggers hit .455 as a team and kept Western Colorado in the negatives at -.087. Tiesman and Janice Jin led the charge with six kills each as Mines cruised to a 25-12 win.
 
Western Colorado challenged the home team early in the second set with leads of 5-2 and 8-7. However, Julia Eiken slammed down a kill from Stokes to tie the match 8-8 and the Orediggers would not look back. Back-to-back kills from Amanda Donais sparked a 7-2, Mines run which propelled the Orediggers to a 25-18 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Coming out of the break, neither team was stellar on offense. Mines hit just .116 as a team in the third set while the Mountaineers were in the negatives again at -.214. The Orediggers' defense saved the day with two blocks as a team and nine combined digs from Hannah Martin and Danielle Mullen. Mines' three service aces in the final set and five kills from Tiesman clinched the 25-16 win and the sweep.
