Bookmark and Share

GOLDEN – Led by a combined 31 second-half points by Trevor Wages and Brian Muller, the Colorado School of Mines men's basketball team put up a 50-spot in the second stanza to cruise past visiting UC-Colorado Springs by an 82-66 final on Friday at Lockridge Arena.

Mines (9-5, 6-4 RMAC) shot nearly 56 percent as a squad after halftime, as well as a very "Mines-like" 81.0 percent from the foul line to bust open a two-point lead at the break to as much as 21 points in the second half.

Wages and Muller chipped in a pair of 24-point performances, with Wages capturing his eighth double-double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds. The junior center finished 6-of-9 from the field and a stellar 12-of-14 from the foul line, including a 10-of-12 mark in the second half.

Muller added his highest scoring output since a 25-point effort against New Mexico Highlands on December 1 with his 24-point performance. The sophomore sharpshooter finished his night with a 9-of-18 shooting line, including a 5-of-12 mark from the perimeter. He added three assists, three rebounds, a block and a steal in 34 minutes of action.

Nico Mucci, an Academic All-RMAC selection, chipped in 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting in addition to grabbing five rebounds. Luke Meisch just missed a double-double of his own with nine points and nine rebounds in a game-high 38 minutes of action.

Freshman guard Trey Winbush knocked in six points, three assists and a steal while finishing 4-of-4 from the foul line.

Neither team got in a groove offensively in the first half, but Mines was able to overcome 10 turnovers in the opening half with an 11-of-12 effort from the foul line to stake a two-point halftime lead, 32-30.

The Orediggers opened up the offense and limited the Mountain Lions (2-12, 2-8 RMAC) to just 7 points on 11 second chances to post a 50-36 scoring advantage during the second half. The win improved the Orediggers' record to 4-1 in games following a loss this season.

Mines will close out its current four-game home stand tomorrow when the squad faces CSU-Pueblo (6-10, 5-5 RMAC) at Lockridge Arena at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear white on Saturday as part of the WAM and SAAC "White-Out."  The first 200 students in the door will receive a free t-shirt, courtesy of WAM and SAAC.  The accomplishments of the fall athletic programs and student-athletes will also be honored at halftime of the men's game.
