DENVER – Home-standing Metro State shot better than 50 percent from the field and held visiting Colorado School of Mines to 36 percent shooting from the floor to capture a 61-50 victory in RMAC women's basketball action on Friday at the Auraria Event Center in Denver.
Mines (12-10, 9-7 RMAC) was led by senior Angie Charchalis, who knocked in 12 points on a 4-12 shooting effort, including a 2-of-4 mark from the perimeter. The Craig native now sits just 19 points shy of third on the Mines all-time scoring list with 1,330 points.
Sophomore Taylor Helbig followed on the stat sheet with 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting while also tying for the team lead with six rebounds. The Thornton native added three steals and two assists in 38 minutes of action.
True freshman Courtney Martin added 10 points, five boards and two blocks on a 4-of-8 shooting effort while finishing 2-of-3 from the charity stripe and sophomore Danielle Skinner added seven points on a 3-of-5 shooting clip.
As a squad, Mines finished 18-of-50 from the field, 4-of-10 from the perimeter and 10-of-13 from the foul line.
Metro State (15-6, 13-3 RMAC) evened up the season series at a win apiece with a 24-of-47 shooting effort, led by a game-high 16 points by Kristin Valencia.
A tightly contested first half saw neither team mount a lead of more than five points as the squads headed into the break tied up at 24-all. The first stanza featured four tie scores and four lead changes, with both squads holding nearly identical statistical lines.
The second half opened up in just as a competitive fashion as the first, with neither team mounting a lead of more than five points until a 3-point basket by Valencia put the Roadrunners ahead 53-47 with 2:20 to play.
MSU was able to make its free throws down the stretch in capturing the 61-50 victory.
Mines will return to action tomorrow when the squad faces Regis at the Regis Fieldhouse in Denver at 3 p.m.
