DENVER – Regis used a 17-to-4 advantage in made free throws and held visiting Colorado School of Mines to 31.5 percent shooting in staking a 59-48 victory in RMAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Regis Fieldhouse in Denver.
Mines (12-11, 9-8 RMAC) was led by sophomore Taylor Helbig, who scored 22 points on an 8-of-20 shooting effort, including a 6-of-12 effort from the perimeter. Saturday's 22-point performance was the Thornton native's sixth 20-point output of the season. Helbig was the only active player to play all 40 minutes of the contest.
Fellow sophomore Danielle Skinner added eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 32 minutes, while freshman Courtney Martin chipped in seven points and two boards on a 2-of-2 shooting effort.
Senior Angie Charchalis added six points, six boards and three steals in 33 minutes to move closer to third on Mines' all-time scoring list. Charchalis is currently 13 points out of a tie for third with Kelly Hadley (1983-97).
The two teams battled through a sloppy first half with a combined 19 turnovers - the main difference being a 7-of-8 effort from the foul line for the Rangers, while Mines made its lone free throw attempt in the half.
Despite a nearly identical statistical line in the first stanza for both squads, the Rangers were able to mount a lead as much as 13 points in the opening 20 minutes. Mines would go on a run down the stretch to cut the lead back to eight points before half which gave Regis a 31-23 halftime lead.
Mines needed just under five minutes after the break to cut the lead to five points at 39-34, but that score would hold until a jumper by Meghan Hollenga fell which pushed the lead to 41-34 with 11:34 to go in regulation.
Mines cut the lead to 41-39 on a 3-point basket by Helbig with 10:31 to play, but that would be as close as the Orediggers would get the rest of the way in dropping their second contest in as many days.
The Orediggers will close out a four-game road swing next weekend with matchups at Black Hills State and Chadron State on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
