COLORADO SPRINGS – It took all five games and a career-high 25 kills from freshman Alanna Winfield, but the No. 19 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team rebounded from a 2-0 deficit to push its win streak to seven with a 3-2 victory over UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday evening at the Gallogly Events Center.
Mines (7-3, 2-0 RMAC) fell behind 2-0 behind game scores of 25-19 and 25-18, before rallying to win three straight behind scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 15-12.
The Orediggers hit .224 as a squad during the match, led by a .382 attack percentage by Winfield on her 25 kills. Her 25-kill performance is good for the fifth-highest total in program history.
She posted five kills on a .625 attack percentage in the deciding fifth set.
Junior Sarah Pekarek and senior Melanie Wannamaker each added 14 kills, while Pekarek added a team-high 21 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Reigning RMAC Setter of the Week Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood dished out 52 assists, recorded three kills and 14 digs to tie Pekarek for the team lead with her fourth double-double of the season.
Senior Hannah Margheim posted 16 digs and freshman Taryn Huber added 18 to lead the back line defense.
After posting sideout percentages of 51 and 37 through the first two sets, Mines posted 61 percent or better over the final three games, including a 70 percent sideout rate in the 25-17 win in game four.
The 25-19 victory for Mines in game three featured a total of 10 tie scores and three lead changes, while the deciding fifth set had nine ties and five lead changes. In total, the 1:55 match produced 31 tie scores and 12 lead changes.
The Orediggers will continue their current three-match road swing with matchups next weekend at Metro State on Friday and at No. 23 Regis on Saturday.
