GOLDEN – Led 45 combined kills from Alanna Winfield, Mattie Behr and Megan Peterson, the No. 9 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team posted its eighth-straight victory with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Regis University on Friday evening at Lockridge Arena.
Set scores for the match were 25-18, 25-17 and 25-21. The matchup featured just two tie scores and two lead changes - all in the third set.
The Orediggers (19-2, 12-1 RMAC), facing the Rangers (14-7, 9-4 RMAC) for the second time in six days, earned their second-straight win over the local rival after claiming a 3-1 win on Saturday in Denver. Head coach Jamie Skadeland now needs just one more victory for 150 in six-plus seasons in Golden (149-60, .713 win percentage).
The win kept the squad tied with No. 14 Colorado Mesa (19-3, 12-1 RMAC) and No. 21 MSU Denver (18-3, 12-1 RMAC) for the top spot in the league standings.
Mines hit .301 as a squad, led by 15 kills on a .419 attack percentage by sophomore and team kills leader Winfield, who also added a pair of blocks and two digs on the defensive end. She was charged with just two errors on a team-high 31 attacks.
Peterson, the RMAC leader in attack percentage, added 13 kills on .296 hitting with a pair of digs and an assist. The St. Louis, Mo., product continued her hot play after being named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday.
Behr closed out Mines' three players with double-digit kills with 12 on a .429 attack percentage and led the defensive front line with four blocks. Friday's performance tied a career high for true freshman.
Reigning RMAC Setter of the Week Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood ran the offense efficiently on Friday and recorded her 16th double-double of the season with a 46-assist, 12-dig performance. The Cypress, Texas, product now needs just one more double-double for 50 in her career.
Sophomore Taryn Huber added a game-high 16 digs to lead the back line while senior Sarah Pekarek added 11 digs and eight kills offensively. Junior Corrine Din closed out four Orediggers with 10 or more digs with 10 of her own as well.
Pekarek and fellow senior Cassie Vick will be honored on Saturday when Mines hosts the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (9-13, 5-8 RMAC) at 5 p.m. at Lockridge Arena during Senior Night in the squad's regular season home finale.
