GOLDEN – The No. 13 Colorado School of Mines volleyball team used 35 combined kills from Alanna Winfield and Megan Peterson and 13 service errors from visiting Colorado Christian to turn back the upset-minded Cougars by a 3-1 final on Saturday at Lockridge Arena.
Set scores for the match were 25-20, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-20.
Despite being out-hit by a 0.229-to-0.182 margin on offense, Mines (14-2, 7-1 RMAC) took advantage when it needed to claim the ultra-competitive matchup that featured at least seven tie scores in each set (43 total) and 16 total lead changes over the four games.
Peterson led the squad with 18 kills on a team-high .405 attack percentage with just three errors on 37 attacks. The St. Louis, Mo., product added three assisted blocks defensively and closed the week with an average of 3.43 kills per set.
Not to be outdone, fellow sophomore Winfield posted 17 kills, seven digs, two blocks and two aces on .156 hitting. She led the squad over its 2-0 week with an average of 4.00 kills per set.
Sophomore Samantha Fischer added nine kills and added three blocks defensively as well, while senior Sarah Pekarek notched seven kills and 13 digs.
Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood notched 48 assists, seven digs, three blocks and two kills during the match to close the week with an average of 12.71 assists per set.
Sophomore Taryn Huber led the defensive efforts with 31 digs and also chipped in two assists and a service ace on the offensive end. Junior Corrine Din finished second on the team with 14 digs as well.
Mines will close out its current seven-match home stand next weekend with matchups against Black Hills State and Chadron State on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
