SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western New Mexico outscored Colorado School of Mines women's basketball by 14 points in the second half to stake a 68-50 home win in the teams' RMAC-opener Friday at Drag's Court in Silver City, N.M.
WNMU (3-1, 1-0 RMAC) connected on five fewer field goals after halftime, but limited Mines (5-2, 0-1 RMAC) to only 27.6 percent (8-of-29) shooting and just 1-of-8 (.125) three-pointers in the frame to seal the 18-point margin.
The Mustangs shot 16-of-31 (.516) from the floor in the initial 20:00 and closed the evening 27-of-57 (.474).
The Orediggers were held over 23 points below their season average and to season-lows in points, field goals (22), free throws (3) and rebounds (34), closing 22-of-61 (.361), 3-of-7 (.429) at the line and 3-of-12 (.250) outside.
Junior Courtney Martin had 12 points and senior Taylor Helbig 11 to lead the women. Both shared the team-high with seven rebounds.
Helbig moved into a tie with former teammate Courtney Gallo (2010-14) for second on the school's all-time three-pointer list at 142 with 2-of-4 makes.
Four Mustangs reached double digits, led by Stephanie Moore with a game-high 16 points. RaTanya Newsome and Nalani Hernandez posted 12 points and eight rebounds apiece, and Jordan Gutierrez finished with 11 off the bench.
Mines meets New Mexico Highlands at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the John A. Wilson Complex in Las Vegas.
