GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines women's basketball twice grabbed a one-point lead following an 11-point halftime deficit, but RMAC leader Colorado Colorado Springs halted any comeback possibilities with 10 of the game's final 13 points to post a 75-66 victory on Friday in Golden.
Senior Taylor Helbig capped a 10-2 run with a jumper in the lane at 8:11 to give Mines (7-9, 2-8 RMAC) its initial lead since 11-9. Classmate Sam Rusk countered a UCCS lay-in with a midrange look of her own; however, the Orediggers could only generate two field goals over the last 7:20.
Despite the cold finish, the women shot 50.0 percent in the frame and 12-of-14 (.857) at the line to finish 23-of-61 (.377) and 17-of-21 (.810), respectively.
Rusk logged her first collegiate double-double, ending with 10 second-half points and a game- and career-best 13 rebounds.
Sophomore Laura Tyree converted her last 11 free throws to finish as the team's high-scorer for the fourth straight outing with 19. Junior Courtney Martin had 13 and six rebounds.
The Mountain Lions (14-2, 9-1 RMAC), paced by a game-high 20 points from Brittany Hernandez, shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) on threes and 82.1 percent (23-of-28) at the line.
Abby Kirchoff posted 17 points and Kellie Krueger had nine off the bench.
The Orediggers host Colorado State-Pueblo at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the weekend finale at Lockridge Arena.
