First Half Prowess Powers Mavericks Past Women's Basketball

GOLDEN – Colorado Mesa put up 58 points in the first half and eased to an 83-66 win over Colorado School of Mines women's basketball on Friday evening at Lockridge Arena.

CMU (15-3, 12-2 RMAC) shot 22-of-33 (.667) and 10-of-13 (.769) from the three-point line in doubling up the Orediggers at the break.

Mines connected on 48.0 percent (12-of-25) after halftime, outscoring the Mavericks by 12, but could only draw as close as 17 points twice.

Shanna Halalilo led 10 Mavericks in the scoring column with 19 on 8-of-11 makes. Leanndra Gilbert had 12 and Erin Reichle 11.

Senior Taylor Helbig posted a game-high 26 behind 9-of-16 field goals, including seven three-pointers (7-of-11) for the second straight game. Freshman Elizabeth Tomon scored a season-best 15, hitting 6-of-9, and junior Courtney Martin added 11.

The Orediggers (9-11, 4-10 RMAC) closed 23-of-52 (.442) and 9-of-20 (.450) along the perimeter, while CMU was 33-of-62 (.532) and 13-of-25 (.520) outside, and held 21-7 and 25-8 advantages in fast break scoring and bench points, respectively.  

Mines will look to regroup tomorrow as the women host Western State at 5 p.m. in Golden.
