How It Happened
Constantly having to fight out of a hole, the 21st-ranked Colorado School of Mines (14-4, 8-2) rallied past Chadron State (4-14, 3-7) by the final of 3-1 (29-31, 25-19, 25-19, 26-24) on Friday, October 16 in the Chicoine Center.
Mines had to rally in almost every set as the Eagles gave one of their best performances of the season.
The opening set was a tough one to swallow for the Orediggers as they dug out of a 20-17 deficit and took a 24-23 and looked poised to pull out the set. Unfortunately, the Eagles became hard to put away as they battled back and eventually took the first set, 31-29. Senior Megan Peterson did all she could to help CSM with six kills in the period.
Trailing by a set, Mines started the comeback trail with a dominating second set that they never trailed in. The Orediggers led by as much as eight in the frame as they cruised to a 25-19 victory. CSM hit .400 as team in the frame while senior Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood dished out 14 assists.
Mines would again hit .400 as team in the third set as they again won by the same final of 25-19. This time though they trailed 17-14 late in the frame before finishing the period on an 11-2 run. Peterson and freshman Janice Jin each drilled four kills in the set.
Just like they had to do in the previous sets, Mines once again had to dig out of a hole in the fourth set. Trailing 23-20, two kills from Peterson, a kill from both Johnson-Hazlewood and Jin and an ace from junior Alanna Winfield were the difference in the Orediggers pulling out the 26-24 win.
