How It Happened
A tough second period was the undoing for the Colorado School of Mines (0-2) in a 76-47 defeat to Arkansas Fort-Smith in the final game of the Second Annual Tony Corbetta Classic on Saturday, November 14 in Lockridge Arena.
Playing against the defending Heartland Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions, Mines started out strong with a great opening period. The Orediggers largely played the Lady Lions tit-for-tat in the opening period including a 5-2 run to close out the frame. That final run included baskets from sophomore Elizabeth Toman and redshirt-freshman Emily Bailey.
Trailing only 21-15, UAFS turned it up a level in the second period with a 9-0 run over the opening 3:33. A layup by senior Courtney Martin stopped the bleeding temporarily, but Arkansas-Fort Smith continued scoring en route to a 41-20 halftime lead.
After the halftime talk, the Orediggers took the court in the third period with renewed intensity as they outscored Fort Smith, 14-13. In fact, Mines closed out the quarter on a 8-3 run with four points from each Martin and freshman Cassidy Budge to get back within 20 (54-34).
That ended up being the last positive run for Mines as Arkansas-Fort Smith put a game-high 22 points in the last period to walk away with the 76-47 victory.
