How It Happened
#16 Colorado School of Mines (12-3) dropped its first road match of the season as they fell to Regis University (8-7) in a hard-fought 3-2 (15-25, 25-16, 25-21, 19-25, 14-16) match on Tuesday, October 4.
After a poor hitting opening set which cost them the frame, the Orediggers bounced back with a convincing 25-16 victory in set #2. With only a 15-13 lead midway through the frame, Mines held the Rangers to only three points the rest of the way as they got two service aces from
Hailey Babcock and forced RU into seven attacking errors during that final stretch.Â
They took the momentum from that convincing win and carried it over to the third set where they again pulled out a comfortable 25-21 victory. Tied at 15 apiece, Mines broke that deadlock behind the fantastic play of
LaRose Currie and turned it into a 23-18 advantage.Â
The issues of the first set popped back up in the fourth as the Orediggers opened the door by hitting .152 (compared to .333 for RU) as Regis took the frame, 25-19.
Finally, in the fifth set, Mines kept taking a lead and look poised to pull away, but the Rangers fought to stay in it and eventually forced the match into tiebreakers. It was then that RU pulled off the comeback and the stunner.
