Mines Tops St. Mary's For First Win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Led by the combo of Brendan Sullivan and Ben Sonnefeld, Colorado School of Mines picked up its first win as it held off St. Mary's 61-56.

The Orediggers (1-1) outscored the Rattlers 38-29 in the second to overcome a halftime deficit, but had to hold off St. Mary's with a pair of late Mason Baker free throws after the hosts pulled within a shot with 15 seconds remaining.

Sullivan scored 18, including a 9-for-10 foul shooting night, and added five rebounds to cap an impressive debut weekend. Ben Sonnefeld had 15 points and three boards, while Baker ended with 10 points. Mines shot an exception 19-for-22 from the line.

Skyler Brooks and Petar Radojicic led the Rattlers with 13 points each.

Mines trailed 27-23 at the half, but chipped away at the deficit and took the lead on a Joe Miks three-pointer midway through the second half. A pair of Baker threes cemented the lead for good, although St. Mary's drew it within a bucket on multiple occassions in the closing seven minutes. Brooks' jumper with 2:02 left made it a 56-54 Mines lead before Sonnefeld's and-one put them up five; St. Mary's would not get a field goal the rest of the way as a pair of Dimitri Peterson free throws made it 59-56 with 15 seconds left before Baker iced it at the line with seven seconds remaining.
