Unbeaten Mines Solves #9 Western Colorado, 25-16
by Tim Flynn
GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines scored its second straight dual win over a top-25 team, taking down #9 Western Colorado 25-16.
The Orediggers (5-0, 3-0 RMAC) remained unbeaten behind
Robert Gambrell's pin and technical falls from
Noah Ottum and
Skyler Lykins as they overcame an early deficit with the Mountaineers (6-2, 1-1 RMAC) leading 9-3 after 141 pounds. Mines beat WCU for the first time since 2002-03.
Mines suffered some bad luck right off the bat at 125 pounds, as a hard landing by
Matt Lavengood on Trent Piatt's first-period shot forced Lavengood to retire, spotting the Mountaineers a 6-0 lead. #7
Noah Au-Yeung picked him up with a hard-fought 7-3 decision over Cody Fatziner at 133, but the Mountaineers took a 9-3 lead after Jason Hanenberg's first-period takedown was enough in a 2-0 win over
Lukas Erickson at 141 pounds.
Ottum and Lykins turned things around, however, with a pair of dominating wins at 149 and 157, respectively. Ottum produced three near-falls in a 17-0 shutout of JD Chenoweth, and Lykins won 18-2 with five takedowns and a second-period near-fall four over Diego Calderon. That put Mines ahead 13-9 before Hunter Mullin beat
Keenan Willits 5-1 at 165 to cut it to 13-12, but that would be as close as the Mountaineers would come.
Gambrell was superb at 174 pounds against Michael Seijo, leading 12-0 in the first period before earning the pin at 2:57, and
Connor Ventura beat Ruger Wyneken in a high-scoring match 12-6 at 184 to lead 22-12.
Jake Feldman faced a tough task against returning all-American and #2-ranked Konnor Schmidt at 197 pounds, but held Schmidt to a 17-8 major decision, and that meant
Weston Hunt just had to avoid a pin at heavyweight to seal the team victory; Hunt did better than that with a 4-3 thriller over Sammy DeSeriere, using an escape with five seconds left to break a 3-3 tie.
