Orediggers Sweep Quincy en Route to Day-Two Split

INDIANAPOLIS  – The #17-ranked Colorado School of Mines Volleyball team started Saturday with a convincing sweep of Quincy (5-3) before dropping its final match of the UIndy Invitational in five sets to the hosting Greyhounds (5-3).
 
Lindsey Jin had herself a day as she threw down a team-best 25 kills including 18 against Quincy. She also collected four service aces and and added three blocks (1 solo, 2 assists) to her day-two resume. Abby Tiesman was not far behind her teammate, tallying 22 kills while also dominating at the net with seven blocks. Amanda Donais rounded out a trio of Orediggers with double-digit kills as she turned in 19 over the two matches along with five service aces.
 
Mines' worked as a team on the defensive side of the ball. Elle Duis (33), Drew Stokes (24) and Donais (13) led a group of five Orediggers that recorded double-digit digs. Janice Jin, Taylor Hicken and Donais also added five blocks each to the squad's combined 15 stuffs on the day.
 
The Orediggers finished up the final day of the UIndy Invitational hitting .223 as a team while holding its opponents to a hitting percentage of .196. Final totals for Mines were 96 kills on 265 attempts, 91 assists, 14 service aces, 118 digs and 15.0 blocks.
 
Match One – #17 Mines 3, Quincy 0
On paper, the Orediggers and Hawks appeared to be evenly matched in their opening contest of the day. However, a match-best .346 hitting percentage in set one gave Mines a 1-0 lead and that would be all the Orediggers needed.
 
Donais led all hitters with 12 kills. Drew Stokes tossed up more than nine assists per set for a total of 28 and joined with Elle Duis to provide a combined 30 digs on defense.
 
Match Two – UIndy 3, #17 Mines 2
In their third five-set match of the season and second of the tournament, Mines nearly toppled the hosting Greyhounds. A dominant .424 hitting percentage in the opening set put the Orediggers in the driver's seat. However, the home squad took two of the next three sets behind a total of seven blocks.
 
In the deciding game, Mines and UIndy exchanged points all the way to 4-4. The Greyhounds took control with a 6-0 run to make it 9-4.  A pair of blocks from Hicken, Donais and Tiesman would not be enough for the Orediggers.

NOTABLES
- Tiesman surpassed 100 kills for the season with 13 against UIndy.
- Tiesman is just 21 kills shy of 500 for her career.
- Lindsey Jin's 18 kills against UIndy came just one shy of matching her season high of 18.
- Jin has three multi-ace matches on the year.
- Stokes now has six 40-plus assist performances as a true freshman in 2018.
- Mines' six wins are the most in the RMAC this season.
- Head coach Jamie Magalei is 238-83 in 11 seasons at Mines.
