KEARNEY, Neb. - Colorado School of Mines went 2-1 at the 2019 Midwest Duals, beating #23 Newman and #18 Central Oklahoma at the one-day dual tournament.
The Orediggers (10-2) ended the tournament falling 32-6 to #6 Lindenwood. It capped a three-day span that saw Mines wrestling four NWCA Top-25 teams and going 3-1 in those duals.

Mines began the day with an emphatic 31-8 win over #23 Newman, beating the Jets at eight out of 10 weight classes including four bonus-point victories.
The Orediggers won the first three bouts as
Matt Lavengood took a 4-3 decision at 125,
Jake Woods won 16-5 at 133, and
Lukas Erickson earned a third-period pin at 141 to lead 13-0. Newman, however, would win at 149 and 157 to cut the Mines lead to 13-8.
Mines proceeded to sweep the second half of the dual starting with
Keenan Willits at 165 pounds, who won a 9-8 thriller, and
Robert Gambrell was a 6-2 victor at 174. More bonus points came Mines' way thanks to
Connor Ventura's 15-0 shutout at 184, and
Jake Feldman won a 12-1 major before
Weston Hunt capped it with a 5-1 decision at heavyweight.

Tiebreak criteria handed Mines a 22-21 win over #18 Central Oklahoma in the day's middle match after the two teams contested an incredibly close dual.
Both teams won five bouts, and both had two falls with three decisions. The difference came on the second tiebreaking criteria, total combined match points, and Mines tipped UCO by a single point, 32-31, after the dual finished in a 21-21 draw.
Mines picked up a healthy early lead after
Matt Lavengood used an overtime takedown to win 5-3 at 125,
Jake Woods pinned Noah McQuigg early in the second period at 133, and
Lukas Erickson squeaked past Nate Keim 4-3 at 141 for a 12-0 advantage.
UCO came back as #11 Brik Filippo caught
Noah Ottum for an early pin at 149, and after
Skyler Lykins returned the favor with a 1:34 pin of Dayton Garrett at 157, UCO's Wyatt Jordan pinned
Keenan Willits at 165 to make it a 18-12 score. Mines' final win came at 174 as
Robert Gambrell beat Devin Crawl 6-1, but the Bronchos reeled off three straight wins to end it despite Mines wrestling tough in each bout. At 184,
Connor Ventura wrestled a tough match against #2 Heath Gray but lost 13-9, and
Jake Feldman dropped a 7-5 heartbreaker in sudden victory to Colton Looper. That had Mines up 21-18 heading into the final bout, where UCO's Greg Wilson won 4-3 over
Weston Hunt to tie the team score.

Brandon Saunders scored the win of the day for Mines as he beat #12 Courvoisier Morrow at heavyweight, 11-5, to end the day, and
Ben Krantz had Mines' other win with a 4-1 decision over Sam Pennington at 174 pounds.
Mines was competitive against some of the nation's top individuals, including at 165 where #7 Kyle Jolas was held to a 6-4 decision by
Keenan Willits, and at 184 where
Anderson Salisbury wrestled to an 8-6 decision against #9 Colton Clingenpeel.
