LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Colorado School of Mines matched its best dual start in program history, improving to 7-0 with a 26-18 win at New Mexico Highlands.
The Orediggers remained perfect thanks to bonus points as each team took five bouts;
Skyler Lykins' second pin of the weekend, another fall from
Connor Ventura, and
Keenan Willits' technical fall keyed the victory.Â
As they did Friday night at Adams State, Mines had to work from behind after NMHU took three of the first four matches to lead 9-3. The Cowboys won at 125 and 133 before
Lukas Erickson edged Jonathan Trujillo 2-1 at 141, but Mines dropped 149 before going on a four-match win streak. Lykins stuck Allen Michel in 2:56 to tie it up, and Willits dominated Kenny Yara 17-1 for a 14-9 lead;
Robert Gambrell then won by forfeit at 174 and Ventura pinned Denzell Morrow at 4:56 to put Mines ahead by an unassailable 26-9. NMHU won 3-1 at 197 pounds, and Mines forfeited heavyweight to set the score at 26-18.
Mines' 7-0 record matches their start to last season, when they ultimately ended 10-2.Â
Mines' next dual action will be on Nov. 11 as they host #1 Nebraska-Kearney at Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
