GOLDEN, Colo. - Bonus points in five of eight bout wins helped #20 Colorado School of Mines win their dual opener, 34-9, over Northeastern JC on Thursday.

#6 Robert Gambrell and #7 Weston Hunt started their seasons with pins while #12 Noah Ottum picked up a tech fall and #11 Skyler Lykins and Nolan Funk notched majors as the Orediggers cruised to a 1-0 dual record on the season.

Mines had to come from behind after Devon Schoenbergor caught Jake Stogdill, who was trying to rally back from a first-period deficit, in a pin with two seconds left in their 125-pound bout. Jake Woods and Wesley Rayburn quickly made up the difference, though, as Woods beat Dessmund Prospero 8-4 at 133 and Rayburn won in his Oredigger debut with a 7-3 victory over Trey Arellano at 141.

Ottum dominated Ariel Rodriguez at 149 with a 17-2 tech fall that included nearfalls in each period, while Ryan Fidel eased past Sebastian Robles 9-3 at 157 to make it a 14-6 lead. Mines reeled off two more wins in a row as Lykins majored Davonn Keyes 12-4 at 165, and Gambrell, on his way to a tech fall, finished off Breason Lewis with a third-period pin at 174.

Connor Ventura suffered a heartbreaker at 184, 7-6, to Hayden Wempen after Wempen earned a late takedown and rode out for the victory, but Mines ended strongly with bonus points at both 197 and 285. Nolan Funk made his dual debut in a 14-3 victory over Austin Kelchen, and Hunt needed just 48 seconds to take down Santana Solano into a pin to cap the night.

Prior to the match Mines honored its senior class of Matt Lavengood, Jake Woods, Logan Pleninger, Robert Gambrell, Drew Hinkle, Connor Ventura, TJ Shelton, Jake Feldman, and Anthony Spallino.

Mines will head to the Colorado Mesa Open on Saturday.
