#20 Mines Places Three At Cowboy Open

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Three placewinners led #20 Colorado School of Mines as they opened their season at the Cowboy Open at the University of Wyoming.

Anderson Salisbury was the runner-up at 184 pounsd, Nolan Funk took third at 197, and Wes Rayburn was fourth at 141 to lead a contingent of 11 Orediggers in the tournament.

Salisbury had an impressive day at the Amateur 184 class, buzz-sawing his way through the bracket with three tech falls and a pin before losing a tough final to Missouri's Rocky Elam by an 11-5 decision. Salisbury won earlier bouts by dominating scores of 18-2, 17-2, and 17-2 to go with a second-period fall.

Funk wrestled all the way back to third at 197, reeling off four straight wins after an opening-round 11-5 loss to Stephen Buchanan of Wyoming. Funk picked up a first-period fall over UNK's Andrew Demos, a 17-2 tech against Chadron State's Gavin Peltzmeier, and a first-period fall against New Mexico Highlands' Luke Allan before beating CSU-Pueblo's Ben Gould 10-6 in the consolation final.

Rayburn also had to wrestle back in a 5-2 day at 141. Rayburn won in a 16-0 shutout over Adams State's Tyler Valencia to start the day before losing a tough 3-2 decision to Utah Valley's James Emmer in the second round; he then had wrestle teammate Teague Dilbeck and won by fall in 1:25, then earned two forfeits before decisioning Donny Proffit of Wyoming 8-4. In the third-place bout, UNK's Nick James won in a close 7-5 decision.

Other attached competitors for Mines included Aidan Funk (1-2 at 165), Anthony Spallino (0-2 at 197), Jack Damenti (0-2 at 157), Keegan Bean (2-2 at 197), Logan Pleninger (2-2 at 157), Michael True (4-2 at 285), Ryan Fidel (5-2 at 157), and Dilbeck (2-2 at 141). True wrestled back to the consolation round of 4 at heavyweight, while Fidel made it into the consolation semifinals at 157.

The Orediggers open their dual season at home Nov. 14 against Northeastern JC.
