Mines Posts 3 Wins, A Dozen Placewinners At UNK Open

KEARNEY, Neb. - #20 Colorado School of Mines crowned three champions and had 12 placewinners overall as they turned in a big early-season performance at the UNK Open on Saturday.
Mines had an outstanding day with seven placewinners in the Elite brackets as
Weston Hunt captured the 285 title,
Skyler Lykins was the runner-up in the 165 bracket,
Robert Gambrell was third at 174, and
Noah Ottum took fifth at 149 and
Jake Woods fifth at 133.
TJ Shelton sixth at 184 and
Nolan Funk sixth at 197.
In the Amateur ranks,
KJ Kearns won 157 and
Levi Farris took 174,
Wes Rayburn was the 141 runner-up,
Aidan Funk took fourth at 165, and
Keegan Bean fifth at 197.
#7 Hunt highlighted the day for Mines with an impressive day at heavyweight. He beat CSU-Pueblo's Gavin Nye 3-2 to start, then took out Fort Hays State's AJ Cooper 6-2 before pinning Air Force's Matt Wagner early in the second period. In the final, he shut out unattached Ceron Franisco 4-0 to wrap up a perfect day.
Lykins, ranked #11 nationally at 165, made a run to the final with a 4-1 day. His tournament was highlighted by a sudden-victory fall in the semifinals against Elijah Valdez of CSU-Pueblo. Gambrell was also 4-1 as he took third at 174 as the #6-ranked man in D-II made it into the championship semis before wrestling back to take third.Â
Highlighting the Amateur brackets were Kearns and Farris, who each won titles at 157 and 174, respectively. Kearns absolutely dominated with four straight falls to make it into the final before benefiting from a medical forfeit; Farris went fall-tech fall-major to make the final, where he won 10-4. Rayburn went 4-1 on the day including a fall and a major decision to finish second at Amateur 141.
The Orediggers will close out the fall semester at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis on Dec. 14-15.Â
