Mines Advances Two To Semis, Six Alive At Midwest Classic

Weston Hunt into semifinals and have six wrestlers alive overall after the first day of the Midwest Classic at UIndy.
In a nationally-elite field featuring 16 teams ranked in the NWCA top 25, Mines is eighth after the first day with 42 team points. #16 Central Oklahoma leads the field with 70 points a point ahead of #19 Tiffin.
Gambrell is into the 174-pound semis after a 3-0 Saturday that included a technical fall to start, a major decision over Minnesota Moorhead's Evan Foster, and a 9-2 decision against Fort Hays State's Martin Verhaeghe. Gambrell will face #7 Hayden Bronne of Tiffin in the semifinals, with #5 Brett Romanzak of Ashland and CSU-Pueblo's Brendon Kelley in the other semi.
Hunt is also into the semis thanks to similar success at 285 pounds. Hunt majored UNC-Pembroke's Ryan Monk to start before pinning Seton Hill's Jacob Beistel in the first round; he then beat Logan Radik of Maryville 6-2 in the quarters. Hunt will take on #6 Jake Robb of Mercyhurst in the semis; #3 Courvosier Morrow of Lindenwood and Jarred Rennick of Drury are on the other side of the bracket.Â
Mines has four other wrestlers still alive in consolations. At 165 pounds, #11
Skyler Lykins picked up two wins to advance to the quarterfinals, but ran up against #8 Logan Grass of Mercyhurst in a 9-3 loss.
Anderson Salisbury scored the biggest upset of the day for Mines when he beat #9 Noah Curreri of Queens in the 184 second round, the second of two major decisions, but he lost to Newberry's #10 ZeBrandon Gant in the quarters 9-4.
Wes Rayburn lost his 141 opener but bounced back with three straight decisions to enter tomorrow's consolation fourth round after a 3-1 Saturday.
Ryan Fidel took a similar route at 157, losing his opener in a 2-0 heartbreaker but reeling off three straight wins by decision to stay alive in the consolation bracket.

Noah Ottum went 2-2 to end his tournament early at 149. Ottum pinned King's Tyler Williams to start the day but suffered a fall in the second round against Tiffin's Chris Donathan; Ottum wrestled back with a major decision was lost again by fall to Seton Hill's Austin Shaw. At 125 pounds,
Jake Stogdill suffered an 0-2 day losing in sudden victory, 11-9, to Seton Hill's Frank Bonura before falling 6-2 in consolations.
Jake Woods was also 0-2 at 133 with a 13-4 major against Austin Hertel of Gannon to start and a 7-3 decision in wrestlebacks. At 197,
Nolan Funk won his first match in an 8-0 shutout but was pinned by #4 Nick Mason of Tiffin before losing 3-2 to UNC-Pembroke's Marcus Montgomery in a 1-2 day.
