Orediggers Go 1-2 At NWCA National Duals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - #18 Colorado School of Mines' first appearance at the NWCA National Duals came to an early end on Friday as the Orediggers ended the tournament 1-2.

Mines fell to #6 Central Oklahoma, 28-7, to start before bouncing back with a 28-9 win over University of Mary before falling to #8 Upper Iowa 24-11. #12 Skyler Lykins was 3-0 on the day, including an upset of #6 Dayton Garrett (UCO) in the first match.

The Orediggers' opener was highlighted by #12 Skyler Lykins' upset of #6 Dayton Garrett at 165 as Lykins majored Garrett 12-1. Jake Woods also picked up a over Noah McQuigg at 133 in a 12-5 decision.

The Orediggers were close elsewhere as Matt Lavengood made his season debut in a 6-0 loss to #6 Tanner Cole at 125, Nate Keim won a 4-2 decision over Wes Rayburn at 141 and Brik Filippo beat Noah Ottum in a one-point heartbreak 3-2 at 149. Ryan Fidel wrestled tough against #4 Ty Lucas in an 8-2 loss, while TJ Shelton fell to Gage McBridge 8-3 and Nolan Funk suffered a tough 5-4 loss to Dalton Abney at 197. 

UCO's only bonus points came thanks to #2 Heath Gray at 184 with an 11-1 major against Anderson Salisbury, and with Christian Arriola's pin over Michael True at heavyweight.

#18 Colorado School of Mines 28, UMary 9
Mines bounced back in their first consolation dual to beat the University of Mary handily, 28-9.

The Orediggers received bonus points from three of their first four bouts to take a big lead, led by pins from Jake Woods and Noah Nottum. Mines won seven weight classes overall.

Matt Lavengood got things going with a 10-0 major decision shutout of Karsen Mosbrucker at 125, and Woods pinned Laken Boese late in the third period at 133. Wes Rayburn reeled off a 9-3 win over Trevor Fauver at 141 before Ottum needed only 1:18 to pin Logan Mahoney to make it a 19-0 lead after 149 pounds.

Braydon Huber won 9-7 over Ryan Fidel at 157 to get UMary on the board, but #12 Skyler Lykins picked up his second win of the day with a 14-8 decision over Payton Hume. The two teams split their last four bouts as Anderson Salisbury shut out Grant Litke, 5-0, at 184 and Nolan Funk beat Gerardo Jaime 6-2 at 197 to add Mines' points.

#8 Upper Iowa 24, #18 Colorado School of Mines 11
#8 Upper Iowa proved to be too tough as they moved on in the consolation bracket with a 24-11 win.

The Orediggers picked up four bout wins, highlighted by Anderson Salisbury's major decision upset of #10 Dalton Hahn, but UIU had two falls in their six wins to pull away.

Matt Lavengood got Mines off to a great start with his 6-4 win at 125, but #3 Justin Folley pinned Jake Woods at 133 to start a three-bout streak for the Peacocks. Mines got back into it with back-to-back decisions by Ryan Fidel (5-3 at 157) and Skyler Lykins (6-2 at 165) before Jamie Gehling edged Perry Rodenbeck 4-3 at 174.

Salisbury knocked off his second ranked opponent of the season with an emphatic 12-0 shut out of Hahn at 184, but UIU would win the final two weights as #1 Nick Baumler beat Nolan Funk 12-5 and #12 Triston Westerlund ended with a pin over Michael True.

The result ended Mines' tournament in the consolation quarterfinals.
