Orediggers Fourth After 36 Holes In Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines is in fourth place after 36 holes at the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational at Walking Stick.Â
Mines was one of two teams to finish before darkness suspended play on Monday; they will wait for the rest of the field to finish round two before starting the final round at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Orediggers put together a pair of under-par team scores with 283 and 286 to land at -7, seven strokes back of the hosts CSU Pueblo with Texas A&M International (-13) and Hutchinson CC (-10) in between.
Tim Amundson and
Ryan Hunter are leading the charge for the Orediggers, both at -3 and in a tie for 10th overnight. Amundson continued his impressive start to the season with rounds of 71 and 70, while Hunter went low for a two-eagle 68 in the first round before giving a stroke back at 73 in the afternoon.
Preston Smith got back to even par with rounds of 73 and 71 while
Jake Welch carded two even-par 72s as they are in a tie for 18th;
Bradley Vu shot 72 in the opener and 77 in his second round to wind up at +5 and a tie for 44th. Playing as an individual,
Colin Dubnik turned in rounds of 74 and 71 to be in a tie for 24th at +1.Â
NOTABLES
- Amundson ran his streak of under-par rounds to six after his win at the season-opening Mile High Shootout in September.
- Hunter tied his career-low with his morning 68, having shot the same in his final round at the Mile High Shootout.
- Welch continued his breakout fall with his even-par day; the sophomore is averaging just a tick over par, 72.6, through five rounds this season, and he found his way into the team scoring for the first time in his career today.
- The Orediggers had three eagles on Monday - Hunter's two in the morning and
Jake Welch's three on 13 in the afternoon.Â
- CSU Pueblo's Jamie Roberts leads the field at -8 through 13 holes in his second round, with TAMUI's Ryan Staykov at -6 through the same.Â
- Monday was a good day for Mines golf alumnus
George Markham. The former all-American Monday qualified for this weekend's Shriners Open with a 64 at Boulder Creek GC in Nevada, and had to win a four-way, four-hole playoff for the last of four qualifying spots. It will be his first PGA Tour appearance, joining former Orediggers
Jim Knous and Marty Jertson in participating on the top-level circuit this year.
