GOLDEN, Colo.
– The Colorado School of Mines Men's and Women's Cross Country teams produced multiple standout performances on Friday evening as they hosted the 5675 Time Trials against Colorado Christian at the Stermole Track & Field Complex.

In a non-traditional cross country format and setting, featuring multiple races on a 400-meter track, numerous Orediggers stood out from the crowd. Leading the way was Zoe Baker who shattered the Stermole Track record in the 5,000 meters. The 2019 All-American finished first in the women's race in a time of 17:17.45 – over 13 seconds faster than the previous facility record and nearly a minute faster than the second-place runner. Baker's time beat out previous record holder Lauren Kleppin of Western State who ran her time in 2011 – nearly 10 years ago – and also won the NCAA Division II National Championship in the 10,000-meter run.

For the men, a trio of Orediggers separated from the crowd. In the first section of the men's 8,000 meters, Luc Hagen ran a time of 26:04.87 to take first place and set the facility record in the first 8K ever timed and competed at Stermole Track. The 2019 All-American's record stood for about 60 minutes before Dylan Ko and Kyle Moran stepped into the spotlight. Ko took first place and Moran took second place in the final race of the evening which was section two of the men's 8,000 meters. The margin between Ko and Moran was .12 seconds as the teammates sprinted side-by-side to the finish. Moran's final time was 23:57.16 while Ko crossed the line at a clip of 23:57.04 to take over the Stermole Track record from Hagen.

Overall, Mines claimed the top five spots in the women's race thanks to Molly Maksin, Melina Endsley, Morgan Molesworth and Heather Keniry who finished second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively. On the men's side, redshirt freshman Loic Scomparin joined Ko and Moran inside the top three while Chris Cathcart helped the Orediggers take four of the top five positions. Additionally, Scomparin made his collegiate cross country debut along with Dillon Powell, Duncan Fuehne, Jeremiah Vaille, Jack Lawson, Alex Shaw, Camden Gillis, Matthew Mettler, Nick Engleman, Kale Cassidy, Max Bonenberger, Ben Longaker, Brody Dempsey, Andrew Gebhardt, Joseph Pearlman, Caleb Coatney, Peyton Solheim, Holly Moser, Sydney Williams, Ella Gibb and Emma Arterbury.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, student-athletes were able to run their races without masks after following a variety of protocols leading up to the event including testing, social distancing and contact tracing. No spectators were allowed to attend and anyone not actively competing in a given race was required to wear a mask and socially distance within the facility.

The next test for the Orediggers is the 2020 RMAC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 24 at Monument Valley Park North in Colorado Springs. Additional information on the conference race will be available the week before the event at www.minesathletics.com.
