Thompson enters his fourth year as the Assistant Athletic Director/Director of the Student Recreation Center at Colorado School of Mines in 2016-17.
A native of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Thompson served the previous nine years as the Director of Outdoor Recreation at Colorado School of Mines. He began his tenure at Mines in 2004.
Thompson earned his B.S. in Education from Bowling Green State University in 2001 before earning his M.S. in Education in 2004, also at BGSU.
Thompson played an integral role in the design and implementation of the climbing wall in the Colorado School of Mines Student Recreation Center as well as the entire Outdoor Recreation Department, including leading students on trips to parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Costa Rica as Director of the ORC.
He has served as the Chair of the Colorado School of Mines Administrative Faculty Council (AFC) and earned the CSM Connected Learning Community Award from the AFC.
Outside of his duties at Mines, Thompson has also worked as an instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), which trains astronauts and Navy Seals in addition to everyday citizens in outdoor environments.
He and his wife, Julie, and their children, Joss and Finley, reside in Golden.
