How It Happened
A cold night shooting proved to be costly as the Colorado School of Mines fell 63-48 at defending National Champion Lubbock Christian at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Mines (2-4) was held to 25.4% shooting from the field by a LCU (1-2) squad that got its first win on the season.
Laura Tyree was the only Oredigger in double figures with 10 points on the night.Â
The game started off well enough for the Orediggers as they actually shot 41.2% from the field to reach a 19-19 tie at the end of the first quarter. Freshman
Heidi Hammond, in her first extended action, scored six points in the period; including the game-tying three-pointer with 30 seconds left in the quarter.Â
Mines then took a 25-23 lead midway through the second quarter after
Laura Tyree hit
Cassidy Budge for a three-ball off a steal on the fast break. That lead lasted for about two minutes before the Lady Chaps tied it back up and finished the half on a 10-3 run.
Trailing 33-27 at the half, the Orediggers fought back to get within one (35-34) off another three-ball from Budge. From there, Mines and LCU largely played each other even the rest of the period as the Lady Chaps took a two-point into the final quarter.
A mere 30 seconds into the fourth quarter,
Elizabeth Tomon tied the game up at 42-42. Unfortunately, that was the last positive momentum for the Orediggers as Lubbock Christian outscored them 21-6 down the stretch.
