GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines battled to a 61-56 win in its home opener against Central Washington, paced by
Nicole Archambeau's double-double on the first day of the Tony Corbetta Classic at Lockridge Arena.
Archambeau had a terrific night with 17 points and 15 rebounds, and
Anna Kollmorgen pitched in 14 points, six boards, and three steals while
Paige Husa and
Elizabeth Tomon each had eight points. CWU (1-2) was paced by Alexis Pana's 12 points. It was the first-ever meeting between Mines and Central Washington.Â
A big second quarter was key for Mines, who trailed 15-13 after the first but outscored the Wildcats 14-7 to lead 27-22 at the break. Mines tried to break away in the third, going up by as much as 13 with a 12-2 run late in the third, but CWU ended the quarter on a 7-0 run of their own to cut the Oredigger lead to 43-37.
Mines stayed ahead until the midpoint of the fourth when CWU tied it at 50-50, but free throw shooting down the stretch kept Mines ahead as Kollmorgen and Tomon each hit key pairs while CWU couldn't catch up. Foul shots by
Paige Husa and Archambeau in the final 20 seconds sealed it as the visitors missed their final four field goal chances.
Mines shot 37.3 percent overall and was 14-of-21 at the line. CWU shot 34.4 percent and was hurt by a 6-for-14 showing at the stripe.
