Second-Half Surge Guides Pittsburg St. Past Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. - A second-half surge by Pittsburg State was enough for them to come away with a 60-50 win over Colorado School of Mines Saturday night.

The Gorillas (6-0) remained unbeaten as an 11-2 run wrapped around the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters broke open a tie game. It was a physical, defensive battle as both teams shot under 30%.

The Orediggers (3-3) were led offensively by Elizabeth Tomon's 11 points and 10 from Anna Kollmorgen to go with her seven rebounds. Emily Bailey produced a big defensive effort, scoring seven points but adding 11 rebounds and four blocks, while Nicole Archambeau had 11 boards as Mines held a 49-45 edge off the glass.

The Gorillas were led by Shelby Lopez's 24 points and Madison Northcutt's seven-point, 14-rebound game.

It was an odd start as Mines scored the first 10 points and PSU the next 11, and neither side led by more than five for the rest of the first half as Pittsburg State entered the break with a 24-23 lead.

The game remained close to start the third quarter, with Mines taking the lead at three different points, and Kollmorgen's jumper with 1:24 left in the period tied it at 37-37. PSU then went on their 11-2 run, keyed by five Mikaela Burgess points, to lead 48-39 by the midpoint of the fourth. The Orediggers tried to claw back with a 6-2 stretch that included a pair of Tomon buckets, but the Gorillas cemented the win with a late 7-0 run as Brenlee McPherson made four straight foul shots.

Mines begins the RMAC season next Friday, heading to Chadron State for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
