LAST WEEKEND REWIND
Mines fell 72-60 at Fort Lewis last Friday but bounced back to defeat New Mexico Highlands, 61-48, in a dominating defensive display on Saturday. The Mines post duo of
Elizabeth Tomon and
Mikaela Moore each had 14 points, and Moore added nine boards, at FLC, while
Emily Bailey went off for 23 at NMHU as Tomon had 10 points and seven rebounds. That win clinched Mines a spot in the RMAC Tournament.
THE POSTSEASON HUNT
Mines secured its spot in the RMAC Tournament last weekend, and currently sits in seventh place at 13-7. MSU Denver is a game ahead at 13-7 with CCU, South Dakota Mines, and Black Hills State battling for the final tournament spot at 9-11. Mines could end up as either the 5, 6, or 7 seed depending on this weekend's results, but will avoid the 8 seed and a trip to regular-season champion CSU-Pueblo in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
LAURA TYREE NIGHT
Saturday night Mines will honor its lone senior,
Laura Tyree, at halftime of the men's game. Tyree will graduate as one of Mines' most accomplished players, twice earning all-RMAC (including first-team honors last year). She has 1,150 career points, is the program assists leader at 393, and has added 445 rebounds and 164 steals to her career numbers. A three-year starter and the 2016-17 team captain, Tyree was a major part of Mines' 2015-16 RMAC title run as the starting point guard.
A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
To say
Emily Bailey has done a little bit of everything this season would be an understatement. The redshirt sophomore has been a leader on both ends of the floor for Mines, averaging 14.1 points per game and shooting .838 at the charity stripe. To that she adds 4.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game, but in RMAC play she's been even better: 16.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting an exception 50-of-59 at the line.
HELPING HAND
As mentioned, Tyree set the program assists record earlier this season, and she continues to put space between her and every other Oredigger in that category. Heading into the weekend, Tyree has 393 career assists, 46 more than the old record. She's bidding to be only the ninth RMAC player to reach 400 career assists.
WHEN WE FIRST MET
Mines won a thriller at MSU Denver back on Dec. 16 as
Emily Bailey's last-second shot gave the Orediggers a 59-57 win. Bailey scored 23 in the victory. The next night at UCCS, a hot shooting night by the Mountain Lions gave them a 73-65 win with Brittany Hernandez and Tori Fisher each scoring 20; Liz Tomon scored a team-high 17 for Mines.
